Building a Simple Name Combiner Logic in JavaScript

Sometimes you need to generate a username, a ship name, or just a quick brand idea by mashing two words together.

The Basic String Concatenation Problem

If you try to write a script for this, the most basic approach is just concatenating the two strings: First Name + Last Name. But that usually looks like a typo. Humans are better at finding the rhythm between syllables.

Splitting the Strings

A slightly better logic is splitting the strings. You take the first half of name A and the second half of name B.

function combineNames(name1, name2) {
  const half1 = name1.slice(0, Math.ceil(name1.length / 2));
  const half2 = name2.slice(Math.floor(name2.length / 2));
  return half1 + half2;
}

Handling Vowels and Edge Cases

This works fine for simple cases. But it ignores vowels. To make the output sound more natural, you often need to check if the first part ends with a vowel and the second part starts with a vowel, then drop one.

I built a lightweight tool that handles these edge cases in the browser. It applies multiple splitting rules and generates dozens of variations instantly.

A Practical Tool to Try

If you want to test out different naming combinations without writing a full script, you can try FreeToolsValley's Name Combiner. It runs entirely on the client side and gives you instant results.

How do you handle string mutation for creative naming? Do you rely on regex or simple slicing?
